creative, but reasonable ways to catch a car thief w/o a camera?

My brothers car, while sitting in our driveway was broken into last night. This is the second time, but first time they actually took something. Last time they just kinda roughed up the interior a bit, my guess is looking for valuables. But this time they took his iPod and a sub-woofer sitting in his trunk (he's a DJ and he was gonna transport it). In total, he lost about $450.00 in one steal. So my question is, How could we go about catching him in the act(please don't say lock the car, obviously, but we wanna catch him!)(without using a camera).

P.S. It appears to be chronological, every Saturday so please answer by this or next Sat.

P.S.S. just to entertain you, he said he was gonna wait until next Saturday and leave the car door open and sit in the bushes and watch. Thought that was humorous, anyway please help.

Leave the key in the ignition. Put a can of petroleum ether into the muffler. When the ignition is turned on, the car will explode. Of course, you can't drive the vehicle for at least a week after the ether is placed in the muffler... (Kids, don't try this at home!) You will catch the thief (or at least bits and pieces of him) every time!
